Excerpt from Select List of References on Sugar, Chiefly in Its Economic Aspects It has been said repeatedly that the sugar question is the economic question, and certainly the economic aspect of no other commodity presents so many interesting phases. For instance, the enormous growth of the beet sugar industry in Germany, with its widespread influence, under economic conditions largely created by legislative enactment and government control, is worthy of careful study by legislators as well as economists. It is the purpose of this list to indicate the material in the Library of Congress treating of this commodity. To those who are familiar with the subject it will be at once apparent that but a small part of the extant literature has been included. The collection in the Library of Congress, however, is so much larger than the collections to be found in most other American libraries that it is hoped the list will serve as a guide to the study of the subject, at least in America. Emphasis has been placed on the economic side. It seemed desirable, however, to include writings on the culture and growth of sugar-producing plants, and on the chemistry and technology of sugar. These three divisions of the subject have pointed the way to the most natural arrangement of the material under three main headings: General and Economic, Agriculture, Chemistry and Manufacture, and in order to round out the list on the technical side a few of the more important German works not in the Library of Congress have been included. These and a few others not in the Library of Congress have been indicated by. The more important government publications of Great Britain and the United States have been given separate sections, while the articles in consular reports and periodicals have been arranged chronologically.
