This study examines how teachers' attitudes have remained constant or changed since Dan Lortie's mid-1960s study of the meaning teachers find in their work. Emphasis is placed on teachers' personal constructions of freedom, authority, and power and how these issues inform their understanding of the function of schooling, their role in schooling, an
