Excerpt from Ruth
The graves of the three men of Judah were on a bare windy knoll on the outskirts of the ancient fortified City of Moab, set apart from the Baal-guarded burial ground of the Moabites. The three low mounds of whitewashed masonry, each marked with the lion of Judah and with the male pillar upraised at its head, were enclosed by a low stone wall.
And the three women, the olad one all in black raiment and the two young ones in white with black headcloths, their shadows long in the late sunlight, were tending that mournful place, plucking the weeds and adorning the tombs with fresh ¿owers.
For, lo, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone, The flowers appear on the earth, Naomi sang softly as she unbent from her task and lifted her wise old eyes from the grave of Elimelech to look westward across the high grassy plains of Moab.
