Excerpt from Roman Life and Manners, Vol. 3 of 3: Under the Early Empire In the following investigation an attempt will be made to show that the influence of poetry on education in general in later Roman times was much more comprehensive and far-reaching than in modern days. For this purpose it will be necessary to obtain an idea of the relation of the educated world to poetry, the mission of the latter, the resulting position of poets, and lastly the substitution of artistic prose for poetry, The relation of the educated world to poetry was in great measure determined by the instruction given to youth, the aims and methods of which were entirely different from those of to-day. The aim of the modern instruction of youth is to put him in the way of defining his attitude in regard to the most important branches of human knowledge, to facilitate, as far as possible, his understanding of the manifold works of science, and to render him capable of taking his part in them. On the other hand, in antiquity its task was far simpler, since the branches of learning now taught in schools did not exist at all or only in a rudimentary condition, or were not considered as forming part of a general education. The development of the creative faculties, not increased power of receptivity, was the object in view. Education was not intended to facilitate the acquisition of comprehensive knowledge, but of special excellences, of a perfect mastery of linguistic expression, of the artistic employment of words to set forth ideas in a clear and persuasive manner, of the choice of the most suitable and elegant phraseology.
