Soon after, Brigadier General John H. Winder called and apologized for the uncomfortable quarters by saying that the arrival of the prisoners was unexpected, and he was, therefore, unprepared for them, but that a separate apart ment for the officers in another building was nearly ready, and that they would be removed to it in the afternoon. The building in which the prisoners were quartered was guarded on all sides by a strong force, night and day. They had been confined there but a short time when one of the guards in the rear fired at a prisoner in a third story window, who happened to be looking out at that moment. The ball lodged in a joist in the ceiling, which prevented it from penetrating the ¿oor and possibly injuring some innocent man above, Colonel Michael Corcoran of the 69th New York Regiment and Hon. Alfred Ely, member of Congress from Rochester, New York, both prisoners of war, called General Winder's attention to this circumstance, and pointed out the ball marks.
