Resisting Pluralization and Globalization in German Culture, 1490¿1540

The evolution of a Humanist urban culture, the expansion of spatial horizons, and the creation of global trade networks are commonly seen as lasting contributions of the time period around 1500. This study argues that in Germany these transformations were not celebrated universally and instead triggered a populist and nationalist backlash against the perceived resulting social and political disruptions and the corrupting global trade.
