Excerpt from Report on Forest Conditions in the State of Pennsylvania as of January 1, 1931Extensive lumbering, which began before the Civil War and reached its peak in 1889, has brought the stand of virgin timber in Pennsylvania to a few thousand acres. While the great virgin forests of white pine, hemlock, and hardwoods lasted, Pennsylvania for thirty years stood from second to fourth in lumber oroduction anong all the States. Twenty states outrank it today.Forest fires, extremely common before l9oo and only gradually reduced in the past thirty years to an average of acres pfr year, have combined with close cutting to reduce per cent of the forest area of the State to e cover of buckleberries and sweet fern. In additional 18 per cent boars only scrub oak, dwarfed aspen, fire - cherry, and other worthless species.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
