Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Life and Character of Col. Phineas Staunton, A. MOn the first day of July last, Col. Staunton, Vice Chancellor of Ingham University, sailed from New York with a. Party of scientific gentlemen, under the auspices of Williams College -and the Smithsonian Institute, for the purpose of exploring parts of South America, and of gathering treasures of Science and Art for the Institutions they represented. On the tenth of October, the hearts of his kindred and numerous friends were overwhelmed with the tidings of his death, at Quito, on the fifth of September. The resident members of the Council of the University, responding to the wishes of the whole community, ap pointed public religious services for the twenty-fourth of October, at which his sorrowing friends might give ex pression to their grief, and mingle their tears for a great and deeply felt bereavement.Such services, commemorative of the life and character of the deceased, were held at the Presbyterian Church, in Le Roy. They were presided over by Chancellor Burchard, and participated in by the Board of Councilors, by the Faculty and Students of the University, and by a crowded congregation of sympathizing friends from the village and from abroad. On the wall, in the rear of the pulpit, was suspended a portrait of the deceased, by his own hand, sur rounded by the symbols of his character and the beautiful drapery placed there by his af¿icted neighbors and friends.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
