On this account there is therefore, a personal element running through them, which, had they been originally intended for publication would have been best left out. But to eliminate the personal matter would have involved a remodelling of the whole, so when friends to whom they were submitted, considered that irrespective of this, these "Reminiscences" contained matter which might be of general interest, I decided to publish them in their present form. I am aware that these jottings can lay claim to no literary merit, and my excuse for letting them go forth is that their interest may in some measure counterbalance their defects.
