For, unless there is such a thing as revelation, in the sense of a distinct and peculiar avenue to truth, open exclusively to the members of the priesthood of a particular religious organization, such organization can claim no unique privilege as a teacher of doctrine, however useful it may be as a moral or social in¿uence. Once it is admitted that religious truth is attainable, if at all, only by the method of science, it must be conceded also that the notion of a Church With a revelation of divine truth is as absurd as the notion of a mathematical society with a revelation of mathematical truth.
