Excerpt from Register of the Officers and Cadets of the Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va: July, 1857 And now, gentlemen, in thus pronouncing your academic nunc dimittis, and bidding you an affectionate God speed in the toils of active life which court the embrace of your disciplined energies, I should not, on this occasion sudden which I am called to meet, tax your already overcharged attention with any prolonged homilies of my own. After the gymnastic con¿icts of the year, in which you have been exercised, I fancy that each of you begins to sigh for a season of rest. This day is the close of a year of toil, and your powers of mind and your sensibilities are rather in the condition of him, who, at the eventide of a day of heat and struggle, 'goes forth to muse, than of him who rises to new labors, with elastic ener gies, in the buoyancy of the morning when jocund day stands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops.
