Prophetic Ideas and Ideals

Angebote / Angebote:

Excerpt from Prophetic Ideas and Ideals: A Series of Short Studies in the Prophetic Literature of the Hebrew People The form "Jehovah" has been used throughout to represent the Sacred Name instead of "the Lord" of the English versions, where "Lord God" occurs in the English translation it is therefore replaced by "Lord Jehovah." This seemed the only course open in a book which being meant for the ordinary reader was yet to be kept as near as possible to the Hebrew original. The word "Lord" either in Greek or English cannot in this case be regarded as a correct translation or a satisfactory substitute, and its use gives us a general and somewhat conventional term instead of a name that carries with it the powers of distinct personality and the influence of glorious memories and definite historical associations. The author desires to acknowledge the kindness of his friend, the Rev. Prof. J. E. MacFadyen, M. A., of Knox College, Toronto, for his assistance in reading the proofs and for valuable suggestions given while the volume was passing through the press.
