Excerpt from Profile of Boston's Chinatown Neighborhood The age distribution of Chinatown's population in 1980 was about the same as the age distribution of the city's population. This was a result of a slight change in Chinatown's age distribution concurrent with a marked shift in the city's age distribution. In 1970, Chinatown already had a distribution that was dominated by adults under 55 (64 percent). Boston's distribution shifted from 54 percent in the 15-54 category to 62 percent in that category in 1980. Regarding children under 15, their share of Chinatown's population was 17 percent in 1970 and 18 percent in 1980. In the city as a whole, the children's share decreased from 24 percent in 1970 to 17 percent in 1980. See Table 2. A few other population characteristics are noteworthy. In Chinatown's tract 702 in 1980, six out of every ten households were family households, compared to five of ten in Boston as a whole. Married couple families were much more common in Chinatown (87 percent of all families) than in Boston (64 percent). In addition, Chinatown's role as a home to many newly-arrived or first-generation immigrants is evident, as 61 percent of its residents were born in a foreign country, compared to 33 percent in 1970.
