Excerpt from Professor Koch: On the Bacteriological Diagnosis of Cholera, Water-Filtration and Cholera, and the Cholera in Germany During the Winter of 1892-93 The chief, and perhaps the only, reason which has led to my being asked to prefix a few words to this book, may be the fact that on perusing the translation, as originally published in the "Scotsman" newspaper, I had expressed very strongly, both to the publisher and to Councillor Pollard, chairman of the Edinburgh Public Health Committee, the desire that the work of Professor Koch might appear in English in a form for more permanent reference. There are many persons in this country, medical and other, who have little confidence in Professor Koch, and it may be admitted that the failure of his therapeutic results in the instance of the toxic inoculation for tubercular diseases has been a great trial to those who believe, as I do, that he is not only one of the most distinguished, but also one of the most trustworthy authorities of this century on all subjects connected with bacteriology in its applications to diagnosis, and also to the prevention of disease. This work will, I believe, at once confirm Professor Koch's reputation in this respect with those who have hitherto believed in him, and will also, perhaps, win him some converts even from among those who have, (in my opinion quite wrongfully, ) disparaged the whole of his work on account of the imperfections of a small part of it.
