Excerpt from Production for Use
Poor America! Its inhabitants have never had enough to eat. The supplies of milk, butter, beef, mutton, fruit, eggs and green vegetables have been insufficient even in its most prosperous years.
To meet the far from luxurious dietary standard set by the Department of Agriculture would require 177 billion pounds of milk. Only 100 billion pounds were provided in 1929 by our dairies. Forty-five billion eggs are needed. Thirty-one billion eggs were laid. Seven billion pounds of beef are required. Less than five billion pounds were produced.
But food is the least of the shortages, though perhaps the most serious. There is also a lack of clothing. The men of the United States had to be satisfied in 1929 with half a new suit of clothes a piece, and one sixth of a new overcoat. Since then, their clothing budget has been drastically cut. The housing situation is even more deplorable. Two-thirds of the 30 million American families live in shacks and slums.
