Excerpt from Preliminary Report on the Clays and Shales of MinnesotaBy various natural reactions some or all of these minerals are com mouly altered to kaolinite or the related clay materials. The particular circumstances under which natural reactions produce kaolinite from other minerals have been the subject of considerable discussion, especially as regards those reactions which have produced large bodies of relatively pure kaolinite. It has been stated that the action of hydro¿uoric acid mav form kaolinite from orthoclase at great depths in the earth, but it seems probable that only a very small portion of the kaolinite known has been so formed. The slower, but more general, process of weathering at the surface is of much greater importance. Weathering is usually, but not invariably, accompanied by processes of erosion and sedimentation.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
