To such I wish to say a word or two apologetically.There is an aspect of auto-biography and self-presentation in some of the minor pieces that is unseemly, but the pieces were first written in letters to friends, or in incidental sketches, and they could not be printed at all without presenting them as they were written.There are likewise some minor pieces, the omission of which the proprieties of age would seem to indicate. One of these, at least, has been inserted by the request of a friend.
