Excerpt from Poems and Other Verses
To Althea.
Time was when victors spread their spoils
From battlefield or racing-post
Before her feet who pleased them most,
And claimed her blessing on their toils.
I am no victor, spoils have none,
But I have woven from my heart
Some webs of fancy, and my art
Invokes your blessing, dearest one.
A slight, grey-coloured, ragged thing,
Perchance 'twill sparkle in your sight
With dewdrops, in the morning light
Of quick-eyed girlhood's sunny spring!
