As one of only two areas of high civilization in the Americas before 1492, Mesoamerica was home to various peoples with a long tradition of empiric and shamanistic medicine. Sherry Fields explores the ways in which the inhabitants of colonial Mexico interpreted their health. She considers native codices, travelers' accounts, chronicles, newspapers, and personal correspondence, along with the many home-remedy guides written for laypeople. Fields also looks at painted exvotos from the colonial period not only to shed light on the illness experienced but also to study the connection between illness and religious faith.
