Excerpt from Periodical Accounts Relating to the Missions of the Church of the United Brethren, Vol. 22: Established Among the Heathen A quarter of a century has passed away, since the conduct of this Journal was transferred to the present Editor by an honoured father, who had been its original projector, and on whom had principally devolved the labour and responsibility of its compilation, for a period of forty years. The form of the work, and the arrangement of its contents at that time adopted, have ever since been retained, nor is there any immediate intention of altering or modifying either. Should such a change be hereafter found expedient, owing to the increasing amount of intelligence received from a widening sphere of Missionary labour, or to any other circumstance, it will be willingly resorted to, with the sanction of the Brethren's Society for the Furtherance of the Gospel, and the concurrence of the esteemed fellow-servant, who is to sustain in future the office of joint-editor. The period, to which reference has been already made, may well be regarded as one of deep and abiding interest. Ecclesiastical epochs of no mean importance constitute its boundaries. Its commencement marks the close of the first century of the Brethren's Missionary labour, its conclusion goes far to complete the fourth century of the existence of the Brethren's Unity. And what wonderful events have been meanwhile transacted on the theatre of the world, and within the sacred inclosure of the Church! What changes have taken place in every part of the habitable globe - what revolutions among the nations - what convulsions of the earth - what marvellous discoveries in science and in art - what striking exhibitions of human power and human weakness! Even in Christian and civilised Europe, how many governments have been successively overthrown, permanently or for a season, - how many constitutions established and set aside - how many efforts to obtain civil or political liberty absolutely crushed or partially frustrated - how many indications afforded, that restlessness and discontent are still prevailing among the nations!
