Excerpt from Partial List of Bibliographies in the Congressional Set of U. S. Government DocumentsThe fact that there is a large number of bibliographies con tained in the U. 8. Government publications is probably known to the scholar, but not to the general reader. These bibliographies differ greatly in subject and scope and though not always purporting to be complete show a careful selection of authorities. The use of these bibliographies is lessened by the fact that there is no list of them.available. The government indexes make note of some of them, but they cannot all be found here. Several of the U. S. Govern mental bodies have issued lists of their publications in which one may find a list of the bibliographies published by them, such.bodies are the Smithsonian institution and the Geological survey, but the majority of bodies in whose publications appear bibliographies of more or less importance have no record of these, hence much valuable material is not accessible.This list contains those bibliographies found in the Congres sional set of the U. 8. Government documents in the University of Illinois library, the file being nearly complete from 1841 to date, Cong. 27, sess. L to date.
