Excerpt from Outlines of Prophetic Revelation, Being a Concise Explanation of the Revelation of St. John: In Which the Design of Each Chapter Is Explained, The Sense of the Emblems, Symbols, Figures, Metaphors, and Similes Is Given, And the Whole Illustrated by HistoryThe. Mysteries of the Revelation seem to me to arise from misapprehensions of its symbols and images, and their applications in history: not from the strue ture of the book or the order of time in which events are presented.I conceive that the Revelation contains allusions and emblems which mark the historical and prophetic outlines of all the great occurrences of the world, which have materially affected the religion of Jehovah, or His worshippers, and those which are to affect them, from the call of Abraham, 2 and possibly from the creation of the world, 3 to the consummation of all things.4 It is true that, in the Epistles directed to the Seven Churches of Asia, 5 there are shown things which must shortly come to pass but it appears to me that this does not preclude a revelation of things which had been seen, 7 which were then in being, and which should be thereafter. The expressions of ver. 1, seem to be confined, and intended rather as a preface, to the seven Epistles to the Churches of Asia, while the direction in ch. 1, verses 19, 20, was designed as a key to the following chapters.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
