In the literature, however, the term is expanded to include the analogous process using mixtures of two diastereomers, which usually arise from placement of chiral, non-racemic auxiliaries onto racemates. Due to energy differences, the diastereomers may not be present in equal amounts in solution. Regardless, the process is typically used to resolve enantiomers, using the chiral auxiliary to direct the asymmetric transformation reaction with an achiral reagent.
