Ou November 7th, they reached the mouth of the Columbia, the great river of the Pacific S10pe, over 4000 miles from their starting point. The explorers passed the Winter of 1805-6 in a fortified camp, on the Oregon side of the Columbia River, in what is now Clatsop County, Oregon. This camp they named Fort Clatsop, after a neighboring tribe of Indians. Ou March 23rd, 1806, the return journey was begun by way of the Colum bia. En route to the ocean the explorers had missed the Willamette, and on April 2nd, Clark set out from the camp on the Sandy to explore that river. The following day he ascended the Willamette to where the City of Portland now stands. In May the explorers left their boats and made a very difficult horseback journey to the Missouri River, re-embarked in August and reached St. Louis September 23rd, after an absence of two years and four months. The explorers were warmly received by President Jefferson. Congress voted Lewis and Clark handsome grants of public land, and Captain Lewis was appointed Governor of Louisiana.
