One Man's Passion as a Steward of the Land

Angebote / Angebote:

A family legacy of strong conservation values and respect for our natural resources inspired Ron Long's passion and determination to research the saline seep and soil acidity problems on his family farm and what the locals call the "Highwood Bench" in Montana. His story begins on his first birthday in 1941, as his family moves from the Palouse, Washington area to Highwood, Montana and will follow a lifetime of stewardship, observation and study. In 1969, Ron will join his father and a group of farmers as they initiate a grassroots effort to address the saline seep problem and form the Highwood Alkali Control Association (HACA). The historical relevance of the HACA undertaking is crucial today. Saline seep is, once again, a major problem on the Highwood Bench and throughout the state of Montana. Around the 1980s, and spanning the next 35 years, the Long farm and the Highwood Bench will experience a steady decline in soil health and crop production. In 2015, the elusive explanation is determined to be soil acidity, caused by low pH levels in the soil, and Ron is, once again, challenged to investigate a complex problem in search of solutions. His research addresses the reasons for the development of acid soil, the importance of being knowledgeable and alert, the effects of soil acidity and acidity management tools with photos and personal observations. Written from an intelligent, yet humble perspective, while depicting a sense of humor, makes the subject matter easy to read and understand.Although this book is based on research, it is so much more! Readers will enjoy local artwork, photos and historical material that enhance Ron's story and provide additional insight into the man himself, his community and the people and agencies he worked with.
