Excerpt from On Varicose Disease of the Lower Extremities and Its Allied Disorders: Skin Discoloration, Induration and Ulcer: Being the Lettsomian Lectures Delivered Before the Medical Society of London in 1867I have been induced to publish these Lectures at the advice of friends who, perhaps too indulgently, suggested that they might be of use in leading to renewed research into the diseases of which they treat, more especially as they indicate points of inquiry which of themselves might repay further investigation, and, in relation to Varicosity, yield results favourable to our hopes of bringing it more successfully, than it has hitherto been, within the resources of our Art. I have followed this advice the less reluctantly, inasmuch as I was unable to give, within the time prescribed for the delivery more than abstracts of the matter which I had prepared, for the most part confined to inferences. In the Lectures as now published the facts upon which these inferences were based are also appended, and I shall be content if the one turn out to be but glimpses of truth, and the other its fragmentary transcripts.
