ON THUNDER ROAD

At the apex of the Civil Rights movement in America a Jewish boy from New Jersey was deployed to fight in our nation's first fully integrated war. Assigned to the mortar platoon of a rifle company in the 1st Infantry Division, he shared the experience of combat with young men from all cultures and economic backgrounds. Embracing their differences, they used their diverse backgrounds to draw on strengths and combined wisdom to deal with the dangers and difficulties that is combat. Each man brought to the experience his own form of wit, humor and common sense. Working together they learned what it took to survive. On Thunder Road is based on Michael Shapiro's experiences during his tour of duty in Vietnam from October 1967 to October 1968. His first work of fiction paints the Vietnam War with a different kind of brush. On Thunder Road gives a more accurate depiction than Hollywood's Vietnam War. It is the story, not of rape or burning peasants' huts but of the friendships of American combat troops. Men who lived together without walls, sharing everything and relying on each other to survive the crucible of combat.
