On Plasma-Magnetic Shocks (Classic Reprint)

Angebote / Angebote:

Excerpt from On Plasma-Magnetic ShocksA fully ionized fluid, subjected to a magnetic field, can be expected to sustain a steady-state shock wave if the usual damping mechanisms such as viscosity and heat conduction are present. This is the case, for example, at low temperatures where the mean free path for collisions is small compared to the dimensions of interest and hence the concepts of viscosity and heat conduction are meaning ful. This is no longer the case, however, at temperatures sufficiently high so that the mean free path becomes larger than all significant dimensions. Under these conditions, the possible existence of a shock is not at all obvious and, in fact has not yet been proved. In this report, we shall examine the properties of a set of equations appropriate for a high temperature plasma in a magnetic field. The usual navier-stokes stress terms which, in an ordinary fluid, are responsible for dissipation will be replaced by terms derived from guiding center theory. We shall show that these equations do not possess a shock solution and that the only possible transition is a pulse.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
