But Harper's Ferry had surrendered to Jackson and Walker, McClellan had come too late. Not too late, however, to interfere with Lee's contemplated campaign, for, being aware of the caliber of the general who was now marching against him, Lee now saw that a great battle must be fought, and skillfully began concentrating his forces for the inevitable struggle. East of Sharpsburg, facing the purling waters of the Antietam, were the stern fronts of the Southern generals whose names for valor history will remember, and the to north, east and southeast slowly approached the long lines of blue in grand array beneath the flowing glorious stars and stripes.
