Of Magic and Mutiny delves fictionally but accurately and deeply into the incredibly incompetent handling of the independence of African States following the demise of colonialism. The setting of this thought-provoking and highly dramatic novel is Kanyinya, an imaginary yet typical African state where a bloody revolution led by an ex-stevedore replaces an autocratic, post independence regime. The revolutionaries misappropriate the nation's wealth and natural resources from the people through murder and even genocide, whilst begging aid from the West, which ultimately lines the individual pockets of the leaders of the revolution.
