Battle William Horn Battle was born in the county of Edgecombe, on the 17th day of October, 1802, and was consequently in'. The seventy-seventh year of his age at the time of his death. He was the eldest of six sons of Joel Battle, one of the earliest cotton manufacturers of the State, and the Rocky Mount Mills, at the Falls of Tar River, are still in Operation under the management and ownership of a member of the Battle family. The paternal ancestor of the subject of this sketch came from Virginia, and his mother was a daughter of Amos Johnston, of Edgecombe.
