Excerpt from Notes on Policy
I beheld a vision.
And lo, a man, great, mighty, and four-square, with his arms outstretched to all the nations upon earth!
And the feet of him were as clay, plastic, and the trunk thereof was of polished brass, bound about with ribs of steel and sinews of indiarubber, and within him was, as it were, a stomach containing all manner of meats, good in themselves but dangerous in excess, but the heart of him was as gold, seven times tried in the fire, for having come through much, he loved to see fair play for all.
And he stretched his arms, like cables, with the fingers for terminals, over the whole earth, while from his eyes shot rays of light, as if they had been wireless messages, to his sons and to his daughters.
His brain was even as a workshop, containing engines, electric, innumerable, the working of which was varied but was for the making of the peoples.
Now as I watched and marvelled within me what this thing, this man, might be: Behold! a wonder, and a miracle! For the feet of him - which had been of clay, plastic, and in which nerves of argon were working in connection with his great heart - became of terra-cotta, and he stood yet more firmly.
