No Way But Up

Angebote / Angebote:

In the early afternoon of August 14, 1994, in less time than it takes to untie a shoe, an entire life unraveled. Craig Vanderburg, active and talented father of two, added "quadriplegic and brain damaged" to his list of attributes. Until he was forty-one, Craig's enjoyment of Alaska's bounty, fishing, hunting, boating, and snowmachining, had been a solitary endeavor. After he added the love of a woman to his love of the landscape, there followed children, more extensive travels, and the building of a home for his growing family. Nineteen years later, the brain damage had erased neither his memory of his own identity, nor that of his loved ones. While the family members acknowledged the prognosis that recovering physical capability would be impossible, they were unanimous in their resolve to bring him home again. Medical personnel, well-meaning but misguided, united in a campaign of skepticism to discourage the family from such pipe dreams and, it appeared, to destroy even the hope that Craig might live long enough to leave the hospital. No Way But Up celebrates his will to survive in defiance of the odds and attitudes, and revisits the question whether life with a disability is worse than no life at all, and who gets to make that choice. It chronicles an arduous personal and family journey through a waking nightmare, during which every day, sometimes every hour, seems to last a lifetime. Above all, however, No Way But Up is a love story.
