Excerpt from Nineteenth Annual Report of the Fire Department of the City of Boston: From December 31, 1890, to January 31, 1892There are now in service in the department 273 horses, of which number the city owns 218, the others being extras for winter use, loaned by various parties for the consideration for their proper care and keeping. The condition of these animals has been for the most part excellent, the de partment veterinary recently reporting that of this large number there was not one unable to perform his duty. Dur ing the year 43 horses were purchased and 5 received from the Inspector of Wires, 23 were sold or exchanged, and 2 died from disease. The number of horses receiving treat ment during the year was 158, resulting in 345 cases, of which 13 were horses taken for use during the winter months, 95 were received at the hospital stable, and the others were attended at the houses where they were assigned.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
