However, a brief glance at Hill's curiously-titled and privately-published 'memoirs', Negro Grimoire[1] reveals a rather more eccentric character (to put it mildly). Mixed in among the fragments of autobiography, these typewritten volumes are packed with verse so challenging it barely merits the word 'doggerel', often also translated into a peculiar (if not singular to Hill himself) code.
