Excerpt from Nature Study and Brush: Drawing Correlated on Heuristic Lines The study of Nature as a part of the school curriculum provides pre-eminently a means of advancement to knowledge through accurate observation and correct reasoning. It is the link between the mind of the scholar and the wide realm of Nature which presents a limitless store of material for observation. This prompts the spirit of research which leads to discovery - a most valuable constructive agent in the education of the individual. The ruling idea of these pages is to arrange phenomena in logical sequence and to proceed in their treatment as far as possible on heuristic lines. To this end much detail is suppressed and technicalities are omitted. The scheme is not intended to be exhaustive, but will be naturally extended by the teacher to meet his particular requirements. The need of suitable records has induced the writer to adopt the brush as a ready medium in representing natural form accurately and rapidly. The subjects are drawn in outline or mass according to the nature of the form to be represented. The brush drawing is strictly auxiliary to the Nature Study matter, hence no attention is given to design. Therein, however, lies the possibility of correlating Nature Study with the Drawing Lesson. The entire object of the scheme is to secure conditions that will make it easy for the student to think for himself. The spirit of collecting specimens is utilised to this end, but it must be followed by systematic classification in order to preserve the perspective of heuristic method.
