Chapters: Ishi, List of Native American artists, Buffy Sainte-Marie, List of indigenous artists of the Americas, Iron Thunderhorse, Elizabeth Woody, Sharmagne Leland-St. John, Rosella Hightower, Five Moons, Hastings Shade, Stephen Mopope, Yvonne Chouteau, Nathan Jackson, Moscelyne Larkin, List of Native American artists from Oklahoma, Catherine Troeh, Klee Benally, Alex Meraz, Debora Iyall, Tonantzin Carmelo, Mary Louise Defender Wilson, Barbara McAlister, Rudy Youngblood, Scarface Charley, Dylan Miner, Rosebud Yellow Robe, Roxy Gordon. Excerpt: This is a list of visual artists who are Native Americans in the United States. The Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990 defines "Native American" as being enrolled in either federally recognized tribes or state recognized tribes or "an individual certified as an Indian artisan by an Indian Tribe." This does not include non-Native American artists using Native American themes. Additions to the list need to reference a recognized, documented source and specifically name tribal affiliation according to federal and state lists. Indigenous American artists outside the United States can be found at List of indigenous artists of the Americas. Scarface Charley Buffy Sainte-Marie, OC (born February 20, 1941 or 1942) is a Cree singer-songwriter, musician, composer, visual artist, pacifist, educator, social activist, and philanthropist. Throughout her career in all of these areas, her work has focused on issues of Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Her singing and writing repertoire includes subjects of love, war, religion, and mysticism. Her music might generally be categorized as folk and traditional music, though she did record one mostly country album, I'm Gonna Be a Country Girl Again, in Nashville and her Academy Award-winning "Up Where We Belong" is pure pop. Her work has been covered by such diverse musicians as Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Neko Case, Janis Joplin, Chet Atkins, The Indigo Girls and Joe Cocker. She is also responsible for Cradleboard Teaching Project, an educational curriculum devoted to better understanding of Native Americans. She has won recognition and many awards and honours for both her music and her work in education and social activism. She was born Beverly Sainte-Marie on February 20, 1941 or 1942 (references do not agree on her birth year) on the Piapot Cree Indian reserve in the Qu'Appelle valley, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was orphaned and later adopted, growing up in Maine with parents Albert and Winifred Sainte-Marie,
