Music in the House (Classic Reprint)

Angebote / Angebote:

Excerpt from Music in the HouseThis passage, which has been frequently quoted for what it s/zows - the large cultivation of musical skill among ladies and gentlemen in the writer's time - is hardly less worth quoting for what it implies by omission. It contains not a word about an audience for the music described. On the contrary, the presence of a non-performing guest is referred to with astonishment and disapproval. Supper being ended, and the musicke books (according to the custome) being brought to table, the mistresse of the house presents the stranger with a part, earnestly requesting him to sing. Singing, with the company described, was the customary sequence of supping, and it is plain that a guest would have been as little expected to Sit and listen silently to the former, as to Sit and watch hungrily the latter.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
