Guizot on the twenty-ninth of August, 1867, as he stood beside the grave of his friend Herbet, and this thought was ever in his mind. While still young, he had lost many that were dear to him, and his old age was repeatedly saddened by the departure of those companions of his long life who preceded him into eternity. He even survived nearly all the friends whose public career had begun long after his own. Many of them might have told the history of their common lives they died before him, and it became his duty to render homage to their memory. On several occasions he endeavoured to make known to the world the nobility of the soul and the great intelligence of those who had passed away. Not one of them, however, stood more in need than he himself did of this last solemn tribute.
