Mid-America, Vol. 24

Angebote / Angebote:

Excerpt from Mid-America, Vol. 24: An Historical Review, January 1942The only detailed history of sixteenth-century Brazil in Eng lish has long been the first volume of Southey.3 His sources were slender, even entirely lacking for the last quarter of the fifteen hundreds, and consequently his work is of the fiora-and-fauna, native-custom, and moralizing type. His observations, Shallow though they were, set the form to the present for many more inept generalizers. Nevertheless, Southey, who confessedly hated Catholicism, and who applied the leyenda negra to Portugal's American efforts at Christianization, bitterly rendered high praise to the work of the Jesuits.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
