Excerpt from Michael Kohlhaas: Aus Einer Alten Chronik Bernd heinrich wilhelm von kleist was born October 18, 1777, at Frankfort-ou - the - Oder. The son of a Prussian officer, and the scion of a family that had for generations served the state, he was likewise prepared for a military career. Of Kleist's youth very little is known. His father died in 1788, and five years later he lost his mother. At the age of fifteen he entered the Prussian army as a cadet, sub sequently obtaining a commission as second lieutenant in the guards. But gradually there developed in him such an antipathy to his profession, that he resigned from the army in 1799, much against the wishes of his relatives and of the king, who wished to grant him an indefinite leave of absence to carry on his studies.
