Excerpt from Memorial Address on Ezekiel Gilman Robinson: Sometime President of Brown University, Delivered Before the University, November 22, 1894 "No man's life ought to be written until twenty years after his death." These words fall from the lips of Frederic Denison Maurice, as he bravely seeks to fulfil his mission in the midst of misunderstanding and in the face of prejudice, and the general correctness of the judgment thus expressed we are forced to admit. In order to determine a man's proper place in relation to great historic movements, in order to appreciate his contributions to the advancement of mankind, yes, in order to a just estimate of his character as a whole, we must wait until the mind is free from personal prejudice, favorable or unfavorable, and until the ulterior consequences of words and deeds have had time to appear. But if for the justest estimate of a man's character we must call in the assistance of time, we need not always wait for a score of years, or even for a decade, before we pay tribute to the influence of a life which has poured itself into other lives, and made those lives more abundant. Such testimony may be given at any time, and ought to be given when the impression is fresh on the memory, for no biographer or historian of the future can justly estimate the influence of a man's life on the world without weighing the testimony of those who felt that life as a vital inspiration in their own.
