From that date, up to the time of his last sickness, I knew him intimately, and, until he became Secretary of the Sunday-school Society, we were almost daily companions. With the exception of this period, and to no small extent including it, others have furnished the materials used in the following Memoir, so that my work has been rather that of editor and compiler than author. This statement is made, that credit may be given to the kindred and friends who have been so ready to render every aid in their power in its preparation.
