Excerpt from Members of the New Jersey Historical Society: May 1st, 1899The New Jersey Historical Society was formed in February, 1845, bya number of leading men of the State, for the purpose Of collecting and preserving the records of the past, relating to New Jersey in particular, and to our country generally. The Society was incorporated in 1846.Its Library and' Collection Of Manuscripts, Portraits, Relics, Curios, etc., have been located for more than thirty years past on the third ¿oor of the National Newark Banking Company's building, on the northwest corner of Broad and Bank Streets, in the city Of Newark. The Rooms are Open daily to visitors.The Library is Of course especially rich in material illustrative of the history Of New Jersey - rare books, unique manuscripts, Old records, and other printed and manuscript works. Of late years. Its collection of Genealogical works has grown very rapidly, and this department is Consulted with great frequency.There are three classes of Active Members: Patrons - Who have donated Life Members, paying $50, Contributing Members, who pay $5 initiation fee, and $5 annually thereafter. In all, there are about 700 members.The Society depends mainly upon the receipts from members for its support. To increase its efficiency, and to promote a more general interest in its work, it is desired to have a larger membership throughout the State.
