Excerpt from Medical Ethics: A Lecture, Delivered December 23, 1843, Before the Ohio Medical LyceumRule 1. When called upon to attend the patient of another physician we should decline, unless the following circumstances are found to exist. Should he be sick and incapable of seeing the patient, or at a distance from the patient, or should he request our attendance, then we may obey the summons. If the patient is very ill we may change the prescription left by the attending practitioner, but if the case be a light attack, and the medical attendant is expected in the course of a few hours, we should not alter the plan of treatment which he is pursuing.Rule 2. If called upon to attend a patient suddenly indis posed, or who has received an injury, and the family physician is either absent, or arrives at the time we do, we should always de cline further attendance, unless requested to continue our visits either by the family, or the attending practitioner.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
