Excerpt from Matters Relating to the Federal Bureau of Prisons: Hearing Before the Subcommittee on Crime of the Committee on the Judiciary, House of Representatives, One Hundred Fourth Congress, First Session The hearing this morning is for the purpose of overseeing the work of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. A critical component of any government's effort to fight crime is the effective management of correctional facilities. Since it was created in 1930, the Federal Bu reau of Prisons has been widely regarded as highly professional and nonpartisan by persons concerned with correctional issues, both inside and outside the Government. There's no question that the Bureau of Prisons' facilities are professionally and humanely Operated. No Bureau of Prison facilities has ever been subject to a court order with respect to living conditions. This is in no small part due to the excellence of its leadership and management personnel. Since 1930, only six persons have served as Director of the Bureau of Prisons. Few Federal agencies can make this boast.
