Excerpt from Mary: And Other Poems
To my Dear Mother.
No mighty name,
In letters large, appears upon this page,
Of Lord or Laird of powerful patronage,
To aid my fame :
No fulsome Ode am I obliged to write,
To feed the vanity of some witless wight,
And lower myself in his and others' sight,
All for a selfish end:
Though all be shrouded in Oblivion's night.
I'll on myself depend.
And, as each line was writ
Because I found a pleasure penning it,
I'll still let Love
Be high above
