Excerpt from Marie Derville: A Story of a French Boarding-School
"Wake up, wake up, my darling!" cried Madame André Derville, as she drew aside the snowy white curtains of a little bed in which lay a pretty child, sleeping too soundly to hear the mother's greeting. Her curly black hair was spread over the pillow, her little hands were firmly clasped together above her head, and she did not stir until Madame Derville lifted her up and covered her face with kisses. Then she opened her eyes wide with a stare of surprise, but, recognizing her mother, the little one heaved a sigh of purest satisfaction, and, dropping her head again, slept more soundly than before. It seemed cruel to persist in arousing her, and Madame Derville had almost decided to lay her down, and prolong for a few hours more the child's happy unconsciousness of the sad parting which was at hand, but a glance at her husband changed her mind.
Captain Derville was a tall, robust man, his face bronzed by the exposure of many years to the winds and storms of a sailor's life.
