Manhood in the Age of Aquarius explores the diverse forms of masculinity that took shape within countercultural radicalism. Hodgdon investigates how a deep commitment to a belief in the "naturalness" of masculinity shaped the efforts of American hippies to create economic, social, political, institutional, religious, and environmental alternatives to their received culture. Comparing the activities and ideologies of The Farm in Tennessee and The Diggers in San Francisco, Hodgdon argues that conceptions of masculinity developed along two main lines: anarchism and mysticism.
