In George Gilmore's words, "The State of New Hampshire paid a commendable tribute to the memory of the brave men, living or dead, who represented the State in the Civil War, by appropriating thirty-two thousand, four hundred dollars, to prepare and print two thousand volumes of the 'Revised Register of the Soldiers and Sailors of New Hampshire in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-'66, prepared and published by authority of the Legislature, by Augustus D. Ayling, Adjutant-General.' One city and several towns have published the record containing the names of the men who represented them. The main object in the publication of this small book, too long delayed since the close of the war, is to furnish the people of Manchester with an alphabetically arranged record, copied from General Ayling's Register, for easy reference to the pages as indicated, for all the particulars regarding the men who represented this city in the Civil War.
